The Power of Hiking to Build Community and Personal Growth
Hiking is often seen as a solitary activity, but it can also be a great way to foster a sense of community. As the co-founder of the USD Hiking Club, I've seen firsthand how outdoor activities like hiking bring together people from diverse backgrounds, uniting through a shared love for nature. Additionally, studies have shown that outdoor activities improve mental health, reduce stress, and encourage social interaction. Creating these kinds of communities goes beyond just physical health to form lasting relationships.
The Role of Leadership in Outdoor Communities
Leading the USD Hiking Club has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It has given me the opportunity to combine my love for the outdoors with my leadership and marketing skills. Whether planning routes, communicating with members, or organizing events, the club has allowed me to develop important skills. This has been an invaluable experience for both my personal growth and my college experience.
Creating an Inclusive Outdoor Culture
As the outdoor industry continues to grow, there’s an increasing need to create inclusive, sustainable outdoor spaces for everyone. Whether it’s practicing Leave No Trace principles or promoting inclusive events that welcome people of all abilities, creating a sustainable and inclusive culture is essential. Outdoor activities like hiking should serve as a means to foster compassion and respect for both nature and each other.
For anyone considering starting their own outdoor group or just looking to get involved in a community like this, I encourage you to get out there and explore. Hiking isn’t just a physical activity - it’s an opportunity to connect, grow, and make a difference.
